Since Mardi Gras I’ve been staying at a retreat in Ragley, Louisiana, called The Rose Marie. It’s beautiful here. Renée, the owner, is opening a farmer’s market in the next town over, and she’s calling it Gillis Village. It’s a great building, that used to be the Gillis Feed Store. She’s been doing a soft-opening sort of thing over the last few weekends, and yesterday I happened to catch these two fellas chatting inside, in an area not quite ready for prime-time.
I loved the shot as soon as I took it. It’s not anything like what I normally shoot, but kind of looks like it belongs on a movie poster or a country music album cover. I was so excited about this shot, it was the first one I showed Renée last night, prefacing it with “This probably isn’t the most useful shot to you, but it’s definitely my favorite shot of the day.”
Turns out I was as wrong as I could be on that first part.
The fella in the cowboy hat is Gary. Gary opened the Gillis Feed Store many years ago, so there’s a huge historical connection with this shot about which I had no idea. They were just two random fellas chatting when I squeezed the shutter button, but they turned out to be a big, smiley surprise for me.
