Shot Through Glass – 8/52

or Through the Shot Glass

I had a shot in mind for this theme, and even took it the other night. I like that shot. And it works well for this theme. But as I was uploading the shot to the blog, I thought of this. I like to play with words, and I like to bend and break rules, and while that shot does the latter in some ways, it didn’t do much with the former. It’s pretty straightforward, and not as creative as it might have been. (It’s terribly sexy though, if I do say so myself.)

But for this particular challenge, I like creative over sexy (but I’ll take both, whenever possible).

Like anyone else, I have “things”. Everyone has things. Some people have a thing for shoes. Some have a thing for sports. Politics is a thing for some, or gambling or unicorns, whatever the case may be. One of my sexy things is lingerie. I love a woman in lingerie. I have a thing for long, red hair. I have a thing for geek girls. I have a thing for touching. I have lots of sexy things.

And I have creative things. Artistic tastes, I suppose. I have a thing for unusual perspectives.  I have a thing for shallow depths of field and I have a thing for lines (especially diagonals) and a thing for curves. And I most definitely have a thing for asymmetry. A quick look down the side of the main blog page shows a strong penchant for creating images with subjects that are off-center. Sometimes I use the Rule of Thirds, but sometimes not. Mostly, I just wing it, and put the subject in the frame where I think it looks right. Often that makes for a lot of negative space in my art.

And as I set up this image what surprised me was how many of those things I was incorporating unconsciously. I didn’t use the barrel for its curves, it just looked right. I didn’t turn it the way I did for the diagonals, it just looked right. I originally had the shot glass dead center of the bottle, and the bottle dead center of the barrel, and the barrel dead center of the image. It took a lot of time to get all that lined up. And y’know what?

It was boring.

Something was wrong, and a little bit of pushing and turning and bumping, and I love this image a whole lot more than the first few shots.

Also, did I mention I have a thing for pirates? Pirates are cool. Like fezzes and bow ties.

Or there will be floggings.

This shot is a part of a 52-Week Photo Challenge, passed on to me by my friend Wesley. Once a week I will be choosing a theme from the list and posting a shot on that theme. You can view all my entries here in the 52 Week Challenge category.

To repeat the disclaimer, this is a project about re-discovery. It’s about remembering who I am, what I’m about, what I love and what I do not. Fair warning, this project will be posted here rather than at my SFW site because there will be nudity from time to time. Some of it will be of me, some not, some artistic and pretty to look at, some just raw.

I don’t intend to think of something every day and then shoot it, though I may do that sometimes, too. But sometimes I will just shoot, and then find something about myself in the frames and post about that thing, whatever it is.

All my #365SelfDiscovery posts will be filed here.
