Butterflies And/Or Bees – 25/52

A pair of Monarch butterflies, a Buckeye butterfly (left), and a wasp (right).

Continuing to catch up the blog from being off the grid for a few days, there weren’t as many birds to shoot as I would have liked at Kiptopeke, but there were plenty of butterflies, and Monarchs in particular. There was a grad student there at the Coastal Virginia Wildlife Observatory (CVWO.org) who was working on her Master’s thesis involving Monarch migration, and she was netting and tagging them while we were there.

This was my fifth camping trip there in four years. My first trip was with my UNCW Ornithology class over fall break in 2012. Dr. Emslie took us there on a field trip, and I was hooked. As an older student and as a more experienced birder than my classmates, it was inevitable that I’d be hooked. I make the trip now at least once a year during fall migration.

On a side note, the Ornithology field trip is very expensive and is paid for by private donations. If you’ve got a few bucks to spare and want to support good science education, you can donate to the class field trip here. Please take a moment to send a few kids to camp. 🙂

Other than the gulls and Brown Pelicans down by the docks and fishing pier, and of course the ever-present FUI (Flying Under the Influence) Turkey Vultures, we didn’t see much in the way of birds on our first afternoon there. Mostly we set up camp, went for a walk or two, enjoyed the sunset together, cooked a little dinner, and just loafed around as I introduced Jez to the wonder that is Kiptopeke.

And at Kiptopeke, sometimes just that is enough.

This shot is a part of a 52-Week Photo Challenge, passed on to me by my friend Wesley. Once a week I will be choosing a theme from the list and posting a shot on that theme. You can view all my entries here in the 52 Week Challenge category.

To repeat the disclaimer, this is a project about re-discovery. It’s about remembering who I am, what I’m about, what I love and what I do not. Fair warning, this project will be posted here rather than at my SFW site because there will be nudity from time to time. Some of it will be of me, some not, some artistic and pretty to look at, some just raw.

I don’t intend to think of something every day and then shoot it, though I may do that sometimes, too. But sometimes I will just shoot, and then find something about myself in the frames and post about that thing, whatever it is.

All my #365SelfDiscovery posts will be filed here.
