Sharing The Love

I love taking photos. I suppose that’s pretty obvious, given the number of photos I take. And while shooting people (particularly in various states of undress) is my absolute favorite bit of photography, I also love shooting all sorts of other things, notably birds (also usually without clothes).

And I also love sharing my love of photography. Through this blog and this website, through social media, and through teaching and giving pointers, sharing my passion for being behind the camera is nearly as wonderful as being behind the camera itself.

Jez has shown an interest in learning the craft, so I’ve been encouraging her and giving her as much time behind the camera as I can. She’s got a great natural eye for subjects and composition. It’s really just a matter of teaching her the intricacies of operating the equipment. I can teach the mechanical stuff, but I don’t know that I could teach the eye. I’m not even sure I understand the eye well enough in myself. Oh, sure, I can say I love this or that photo because of the lines or curves or light or color or whatever, but really setting up the shot and taking it this way as opposed to that way isn’t nearly as consistently about forethought as much as it is about feel. This shot is a good instance of that. When I took this shot of Jez waiting on the sunrise, I wasn’t thinking about placing her all the way to the left and the pole in the background a particular distance from the right or framing the tree line to be so far up the image or anything like that. I moved around and reframed the shot until it felt right, then squeezed the shutter button. I tried a few different frames, but I knew this was my shot before the shutter ever clicked.

That’s the eye.

Jez has the eye, and I’ve been loving the stuff she’s been shooting. Perhaps she’ll let me feature a shot or two here at some point. I’d like that.

Meanwhile, I’m just going to love sharing my love with my love. And that’s enough.

To repeat the disclaimer, this is a project about re-discovery. It’s about remembering who I am, what I’m about, what I love and what I do not. Fair warning, this project will be posted here rather than at my SFW site because there will be nudity from time to time. Some of it will be of me, some not, some artistic and pretty to look at, some just raw.

I don’t intend to think of something every day and then shoot it, though I may do that sometimes, too. But sometimes I will just shoot, and then find something about myself in the frames and post about that thing, whatever it is.

All my #365SelfDiscovery posts will be filed here.
