The Rule of Thirds at its simplest is pretty straightforward. Arrange a subject in a visual piece about a third of the way in from the edge of the piece, and it has a nice balance, or something approximately thereabouts. I use it sometimes to frame a shot, and subvert it sometimes too, by placing my subject at some different location.

Sometimes I do both at the same time, as in this piece, much like I play into The Male Gaze while simultaneously subverting it.
